The Journey

Who is the Poker Lama?
The Giver of Poker Advice and Spiritual Poker Guide

The Poker Lama is the modern day ‘spiritual’ guide to playing successful and profitable online poker.  He has shared his wisdom and advice with players spanning the globe, from Canada to Australia, and is affiliated with many of the leading poker sites, such as RakeTheRake and Poker-Edge.

This site is not dedicated to teaching you techniques, tips, odds or strategies for when you are sitting at the tables, as is the case with most of the other poker sites out there.   Rather, the Poker Lama is a site focused on preparing you the player, for battle on the tables from philosophical and psychological points of view.

The fact is that the majority of players’ online careers are headed for disaster before they even lay their first bet, because they are not properly prepared or equipped. The Poker Lama offers wisdom and enlightenment, to help you in your poker quest. He does this because he has received countless lessons from others along his journey. While the Lama is not superstitious, he does believe in karma.

If you are not concerned with preparation, or you believe that you are already a successful enough player, you may wish to not read on.  Otherwise, take a deep breath, and let the Poker Lama lead you on your Journey.

The Lama's Journey

The most important thing to remember on your poker journey is to enjoy it. When I was making a run at becoming a professional poker player, it was tremendously exhilarating. I devoted months solely to playing and studying poker; this was all I did. The thought process was, that after playing winning poker for this much time I could become a professional player. The attainment of this goal was followed by the empty feeling of a false realization. I originally thought that it would liberate me of the burdens and restrictions of having to work only to later realize that is exactly what I made it into.

Despite being a winning player I was showing some of the signs of problem gambling. It is important to be aware of what the signs are if you choose to play. Like most things in life, if you can not accept that you may have a problem, then you are likely to have one.

Shortly after quitting my job I found a balance between poker and life; now I probably play somewhere on average around 20 hours a week. Only after prioritizing poker could I finally attain my goal of liberating myself from the restrictions and burdens of full time employment.

An Imperative Truth

The important truth here is that most people will never become professional poker players and that even if you succeed, you may no longer find it enjoyable. If you accept this going in, you will play poker for the enjoyment of the game. If you become successful at it and wish to take a run at becoming a pro, you must still keep playing poker for the enjoyment of the game. When you truly adopt this philosophy you will have achieved your goal, even if you do not succeed.
